Friends David and Lynn joined us for a sail from Santa Barbara to Santa Cruz Island. Thank goodness they did because Joe partially ruptured his Achilles tendon while getting groceries. We dropped the hook at Prisoner’s Harbor where we swam and enjoyed the scenery. Anchored nearby was the tall ship, Irving Johnson, whose brave crew worked to furl its many lofty sails. The next morning, we motored to Painted Cave and took turns rowing the dinghy into the massive sea cave, one of the biggest in the US. It’s 160ft tall and 1/4 mile deep. After that we motored to Ventura. While on the water to and from SC Island, we saw multiple pods of Pacific common dolphins as well as multiple humpback whale pairs. Several pods of dolphins came to visit and swim with us, while the whales always seemed to want to cross our bow (meaning we had to slow and turn to avoid colliding!). From now on in these waters, when we sail at night with poor visibility, we think we’ll need to sail very slowly to avoid collisions with the 70,000lb fellows. Next stop, Catalina Island!
